Chris Metzen, the senior VP of story and franchise development for Blizzard Entertainment, has officially retired from the video game industry.
The news was shared through a lengthy forum post on Blizzard’s official forums. In the post, Metzen detailed his career at Blizzard Entertainment, and how hard it is for him to retire. Metzen stated in the forum post that:
“The reason I use the word ‘retire’ is because I’m not going to some other company or starting up new projects or anything remotely like that. It’s been a long, amazing stretch of years. Now it’s time to slow it down. Rest. Lay around on the couch and get fat. Well, fatter.…”
Chris Metzen is best known for his extensive work throughout Blizzard’s franchises: Metzen wrote the script for Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, was creative director for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos; co-created the universe of Diablo; and was the lead designer for Starcraft. Most recently, Metzen was one of the creative directors for Blizzard’s critically acclaimed Overwatch.
Chris Metzen also lent his voice work to many of Blizzard’s games, including the Skeleton King in Diablo II and Bastion in Overwatch.
I didn’t realize how many of my favourite games Metzen had a hand in. I grew up playing Starcraft with my friends, I absolutely love Warcraft III, and Diablo is one of my favourite series on PC, as well as Overwatch being a stellar game. I hope the best for Metzen in his retirement, because he truly deserves it!
